Singer House

Singer House - Russia Tour

The Singer House is one of the eye-catching buildings in Saint Petersburg. The Building, also known as the Dom Knigi, is one of the few libraries and bookstores in the world that works 24 hours a day. This building is located near the Griboedov Canal and opposite the Kazan Cathedral on Nevsky Prospect and was designed by Pavel Syuzor in 1902. The building was initially intended for a Russian branch of the Singer Factory for the sale of sewing machines. The company wanted to build the tallest skyscraper in the city, same as the Singer Building in New York, but according to legal constraints, they could not create it more than seven floors or 23.5 meters’ height. However, after the construction, Syuzor installed a metal and glass room with a glass sphere (2.8 meters in diameter) on the building to make it higher.

The building’s decoration was made in bronze which at that time was new to Saint Petersburg. The sculptures on the building are made by Amandus Heinrich Adamson, an Estonian sculpture. The facades of the building with the mixtures of the green bronze with gray and red granite have a stupendous view. The interiors of the house completely renovated from 2004 to 2006 and represented the riches superb modern designs.
In the first World War, the building was the embassy of the United States. After that in the October Revolution in Russia, the government confiscated it and turned it into a bookstore and a book publishing company (Petrogosizdat), and later in 1938 titled with “The House of Books.” For nearly seventy years, this remarkable building has been used as the most popular library and bookshop.

In the company of the many bookshelves, or in a cafe with a book and a cup of scented coffee, you can hide from the fuss in this great city or walk to the old marble steps and enjoy Venetian decorations.
