Palace Square
One of the most
luxurious and harmonious architectural building in the world is the Palace Square in Saint
Petersburg, which has remained for nearly three centuries, attracting tourists’
attention to the Russian tour. Palace Square was built between 1819 and 1829 by Carlo
Rossi, an Italian neoclassical architect who designed most of the streets and
squares of Saint Petersburg. Like the Red Square in Moscow, the Palace Square
in Saint Petersburg has seen many important events in Russian history. The
“Bloody Sunday” on January 22, 1905, was one of the most important events of
the square which the Tsarist army shot the defenseless people who had gathered
for a strike. Other historical events were the Bolshevik Revolution of
1917 Today, 1991 Communist Coup.
Today the Palace Square
witnesses more peace and tranquility. The people of the city gather there, and
the tourists are staring at the magnificent Hermitage
architecture. Political
demonstrations and official ceremonies will also be held there, but you will
see more concerts and various festivals. Our Russian
tour company helps you to
observe these wonderful moments closely.
The magnificent palace
square is the historic heart of Saint Petersburg and surrounded by the most
luxurious historical buildings of Saint Petersburg. The Winter Palace is
located on the northern side, a baroque style building that was built between
1754 and 1762. It was the main residence of the Russian tsars and was located along
of the river Neva. A building in white and yellow is standing on the southern
side of the square, the former house of the imperial army, but today is the
seat of local government. It was built between 1819 and 1829 and designed by
Carlo Rossi. This 520-meter building has a historic central arch, which at the
time of the Romanovs, huge armies paraded beneath it. This vault reaches the
street “Nevsky,” the largest street in the city of Saint Petersburg. On the
eastern side, there is the former Royal Guards building, Guards Corps
Headquarters, which is now used as a government office, too. On the western
side of the square, you will see the garden and the Navy. The Navy was one of
the first buildings built in Saint Petersburg. The office was the station of the
Russian Navy until 1917, but today it became the Navy College. From 1923 to
1944, the Palace Square was renamed Uritsky Square. Mosei Uritsky was the
revolutionary leader of the Bolshevik Party. In 1924, a giant chessboard was
created in the square. The sailors and soldiers of the Red Army demonstrated
black and white chess pieces and the game controlled through the telephone. Our
Russia tour company provides you with a range of guidance to help you to find
and learn more about the historical events of this square.

is located in the middle of it and known as the “Alexander” pillar. This pillar
is a reminder of Russia’s victory against the Napoleonic army of France
although its designer is a French architect! Auguste de Montferrand built
Alexander pillar between 1830 and 1834. The memorial building is about
47-meters height and on top of it is an angel that is said to be designed
similar to Emperor Alexander II. The weight of this monument was more than 6
